How to Become a Christian
What is Communion?
What is Communion

Since the beginning of the New Testament church, “Communion” (1 Corinthians 10:16), also known as the “Lord’s Supper” (1 Corinthians 11:20), the “Lord’s table” (1 Corinthians 10:21) or “breaking of bread” (Acts 2:42) has been a central part of worship by the church.

It is intended to be a memorial service to Jesus who instituted it on the night before His crucifixion ((1 Corinthians 11:24-26). He broke the bread and told His disciples it was His body which would be given on the cross. He also took the cup (filled with “the fruit of the vine”) and said it was His blood that would be shed. He then commanded the disciples “this do in remembrance of me”.

Jesus gave no specific instructions as to the frequency of the observance. However, scripture shows that the church met on the first day of each week and “broke bread” together. At Capital City Christian Church we follow the example of the early church and observe it each week.

We believe this frequency of observance has a tremendous impact on persons’ spiritual growth. As we eat the bread and drink the cup it takes our minds back to the cross, reminding us that we are not saved because we are good enough or because we’ve worked hard enough to attain it. Rather, it reminds us that we are saved because of what Jesus has done for those who have accepted Him as their Savior.

1 Corinthians 11:23-30 gives us instructions for properly observing Communion. It should be a time of reverence, self-examination, confession of our sins, thanksgiving for what Christ has done for us, dedication to living for Him and anticipation of His coming again.
